Each of the categories listed below will have examples of various projects, utilizing plants, materials and designs to create handsome, resource efficient landscapes.
Hardscape refers to the permanent, durable, functional elements that form the backbone of the landscape. They can also be beautiful, helping define the style of your garden, and play a large part in your landscape budget.

Irrigation Systems are integral to the design of resource efficient landscapes. Below you will see examples of designs that incorporated various watering systems and alternative lawn landscape designs.

Using materials that create the least impact on the environment is an important principle of sustainable landscaping. Recycled materials, found objects and local, natural materials can greatly enhance a landscape. They should not be thought of as cheap substitutes. If they work, let's use them.

Plant choices are made with the client and are specific to the requirements of the project. Of primary importance, along with design considerations, are climatic compatibility, exposure requirements, water and soil needs. Architectural style, flower color, duration and timing, along with textural variation and compatiblility factor into the selections, as well. Other criteria include native origin, and compatibility with adjacent plants and other landscape elements. Here are a few plants and combinations we like:

Atascadero 1 residence: converted front lawn surrounding blue oak to minimal plantings of drought tolerant and Native plants. Replaced old deck and brick entry with local river rock wall, capped with recycled incense cedar plank bench cap and used brick caps and patio.

Paso Robles 1 residence: Barren hillside becomes a yard with the best of everything: a spa terrace, an instant olive grove, rosemary, lavenders, grasses, leading up to a hillside patio with firepit and outdoor kitchen unit, with a variety of fruit trees overlooking the property.

Steep grades are challenging, but can be transformed into beautiful and useful outdoor living spaces. This landscape renovation features multiple terraces, a gazebo, waterfall and pond, outdoor kitchen, and extensive walls, stairs and pathways.

Notable Projects
Apple Valley Park, Atascadero, CA. Through Madrone's efforts, over 70 native oak trees and a dozen heritage apple trees were saved for inclusion during the construction of this neighborhood park.

Planted in 2008, the City Hall Annex landscape, designed by Rick Mathews, features a water-conserving plant pallette, complementing the adjacent Colony Square and theatre.

Congregation Beth David, San Luis Obispo. Design by Rick Mathews. Architecture by San Luis Sustainability Group. Plant pallette includes California Natives, and appropriate Mediterranean species of cultural significance to Jewish traditions. First LEED certified development on the Central Coast.

The Myracle residence landscape, designed by Christy O'Hara at Madrone, was awarded by Atascadero Mutual Water Co. for design excellence and water conservation. It features plants and hardscape elements that beautifully compliment the Craftsman style home.
