Pataye Residence

Pataye Residence

Pataye Custom Private Residence, Cayucos

The Pataye home is designed in a contemporary style by Jade Architecture, set in a beautiful mixed evergreen forest along the northern central coast. The home was built off-grid by Semmes and Co. Builders and features rammed earth.

Madrone’s landscape design needed to seamlessly bridge the substantial transition between the unique contemporary architecture to the surrounding mixed evergreen forest, maximizing usable outdoor space and minimizing maintenance and all energy inputs.

The project was sited in an area where minimal tree removal or mitigation was necessary. Madrone’s design used native drought-tolerant plants in a modern styling. The simple, low-maintenance plant palette utilizes foliage color and texture to create a dramatic effect alongside the modern home.

Outdoor living spaces were maximized through a custom water wall, stepping stones and pavers, and a lawn area created from a native turf substitute.

Upon driving up to the residence, visitors are greeted with a series of dg paths and a grand display of native and Mediterranean plants. Some of the selections, like New Zealand Flax and Cape Rush, offer year-round interest, while the seasonal bloomers such as yarrow, create a profusion of color during their bloom period. Walking around to the other side of the house, the backyard reveals its vast expanse. On one end, a natural stone firepit and seating area await the perfect winter night. Above that sits a series of steps leading to a gazebo which overlooks the vineyards. Across the way, a large wooden pergola shades the patio – offering relief from the hot summer sun. Nearby, surrounded by California native plants, sits a quietly-bubbling boulder fountain. All the elements together create a landscape perfectly suited for every season.

The front yard of this landscape was transformed from an empty, barren space into a small oasis. The flagstone paving lends itself well to the natural landscape surroundings, and the urn fountain offers a delicate sound and sense of tranquility. The greens and golds found in the native plants also reflect the colors of the surrounding environment. Finally, the custom-cut steel gates finish off the elegant, natural vibe with a tree-branch style pattern. The backyard reflects the same materials and similar feeling of an oasis, with an infinity edge pool overlooking the vast mountainous landscape.

Private Residence

In the hills of Templeton, this newly-constructed residence offers sweeping views of the surrounding hills. With dramatic grade changes, a series of retaining walls tidies the space and offers more usable area. The pavers, picked to match the retaining wall material, further complete the “finished” look of the space, while carefully selected plant materials are placed to soften the hard edge of all the block material. Finally, large boulders (selected from on-site) are used to bring greater texture and interest to the landscape.
