Hotel SLO

Hotel SLO

Hotel SLO | San Luis Obispo, CA

Located in San Luis Obispo’s vibrant downtown, this boutique hotel features contemporary landscapes with outdoor terraces and gardens. The four-level, 78-room property is nestled between historic downtown buildings and the roof-top lounge offers view of the inland hills. The selection and sourcing of specimen trees and other plants including a six-foot organ pipe cactus were closely coordinated during the early phases of design with Gensler Architects. This proactive approach proved beneficial when a 5,500-lb olive tree was craned in over four stories of building to set the tree to the precision of inches. The coordination of complex smart irrigation systems through hundreds of tons of concrete were regularly discussed with plumbing and electrical subcontractors.

Landscape Design: Gensler Architects | Landscape Construction: Madrone Landscapes and JW Design

Madrone Landscapes was already on board when I came onto the team for the Hotel SLO project, but it was immediately evident that they were an invested part of the process. Daniel was on top of submittals, and he made sure there was complete team buy-in on plant selection and sourcing. During landscape installation, I was impressed with the quality of their work. We were stacking trades tightly to meet construction milestones, and I appreciated Madrone’s willingness to work around those other trades. I would recommend Madrone Landscapes in a heartbeat.

Pataye Residence

Pataye Residence

Pataye Custom Private Residence | Cayucos, CA

The Pataye home is designed in a contemporary style by Jade Architecture, set in a beautiful mixed evergreen forest along the northern central coast. The home was built off-grid by Semmes and Co. Builders and features rammed earth.

Madrone’s award-winning landscape design seamlessly bridges the substantial transition between the unique contemporary architecture to the surrounding mixed evergreen forest, maximizing usable outdoor space and minimizing maintenance and all energy inputs.

The project was sited in an area where minimal tree removal or mitigation was necessary. Madrone’s design used native drought-tolerant plants in a modern styling. The simple, low-maintenance plant palette utilizes foliage color and texture to create a dramatic effect alongside the modern home.

Outdoor living spaces were maximized through a custom water wall, stepping stones and pavers, and a lawn area created from a native turf substitute.

Tolosa Winery

Tolosa Winery

Tolosa Winery | San Luis Obispo, CA

Tolosa’s tasting room sits nestled within the vines of Edna Valley. Walking up to the tasting room door, visitors are greeted with playful grasses dancing in the ever-present breeze. Once led to the back patio, there are multiple seating nooks to choose from based on group size. The main area is very open, with flagstone paths leading to different seating options. Umbrellas offer the most shade in these areas, with minimal plantings to accentuate the hardscape. Following the path toward the grove of olive trees, smaller, more intimate spaces come into view. The field-grown olive trees offer more dense shade and privacy to these nooks, with grasses and path lights leading the way through the space. Finally, the area opens back up to showcase an incredible, metal kinetic sculpture that moves gently with the breeze. At the base of the sculpture, brightly-colored sage and kangaroo paw plants complete the dynamic centerpiece.

Landscape Design: Christy O’Hara and MW Architects |  Landscape Construction: Madrone Landscapes and JW Design

Madrone was approachable during the decision-making process. They understood our ultimate goals and seemed to be a company that would be responsive to our needs. That turned out to be true! Accommodating and responsive, the landscape construction team were great partners. It doesn’t matter if it’s a small or large project, Madrone is invested in our success. I would recommend using Madrone for design as well as for installation because having the project continuity is greatly beneficial.

Templeton Estate

Templeton Estate

Templeton Estate | Templeton, CA

This setting offers beauty from every angle. Driving up to the residence, visitors are greeted with a series of dg paths and a grand display of native and Mediterranean plants. Some of the selections, like New Zealand Flax and Cape Rush, offer year-round interest, while the seasonal bloomers such as yarrow, create a profusion of color during their bloom period.

Walking around to the other side of the house, the backyard reveals its vast expanse. On one end, a natural stone firepit and seating area await the perfect winter night. Above that sits a series of steps leading to a gazebo that overlooks the vineyards. Across the way, a large wooden pergola shades the patio – offering relief from the hot summer sun. Nearby, surrounded by California native plants, sits a bubbling boulder fountain. All the elements together create a landscape perfectly suited for every season.

Lake Park Native Garden

Lake Park Native Garden

Lake Park Native Garden | Atascadero, CA

First planted by the Atascadero Native Tree Association in 1992, this garden was established by members of the community. 25 years later, in 2017, a renovation project was designed and installed by Madrone in collaboration with the City of Atascadero, the Atascadero Mutual Water Company, and many other sponsors and volunteers.

After successful volunteer events, the Lake Park Native Garden now sits as an iconic display of California native plants.
