Brecon Estate Wines

Brecon Estate Wines

Brecon Estate | Paso Robles, CA

Tucked just off of Vineyard Drive, the Brecon Estate tasting room offers a shady oasis in the west Paso Robles heat. Once parked in the parking lot, visitors follow an array of California native plants to a weathered steel bridge. Upon crossing, they find themselves passing under the dappled shade of oak trees and see the clearing that leads them straight to the comfortably-contemporary Brecon Estate tasting room. The landscape highlights the features of the building using upright grasses, and colors that contrast against the structure. Tree and plant selections closer to the seating area add to the cooling effect created by the natural landscape. The natural stone retaining walls are used to create tiered spaces, including lawns and a bocce court, creating plenty of usable space while paying homage to the natural surroundings.

Outstanding Achievement in Hardscape Construction and Landscape Lighting

Welcome to beachfront bliss here on the Central Coast! Here’s a project for visitors to the Inn to enjoy both during the day with scenic views of Morro Rock or after dark around one of three custom-designed fire pits. The main statement wall made of locally-sourced Cambria stone is curved to mimic the organic shapes of shore and waves. Madrone detailed everything from the partition walls, barbeque island, fire pits and seat walls to the beach pebbles and planted areas. Materials such as composite wood, colored beach pebbles and pavers were selected for their durability as well as beauty. Ample landscape lighting further makes the space inviting as the sun sets on a truly gorgeous location.

Fresh Family Friendly

Fresh Family Friendly

Fresh Family Friendly | San Luis Obispo, CA

This custom design build project in San Luis Obispo finishes out a a beautiful new residence tucked into a gradually-sloping site with a majestic oak tree overhead. A new board-form concrete retaining wall levels the project area, creating a nook for a large swim spa just off of the main patio area. One deck encircles the spa, providing for seating and integrated, safe accessibility, while a mirroring deck extends the raised patio space underneath the oak with minimal impact to the tree. A leveled lower patio area functions as a secondary seating area and transition to a large sweeping lawn area. A modern layout of concrete stepping stones connects the upper decking with another, smaller seating area in the corner. An assortment of flowing grasses, hedging plants, ferns, and Japanese maples provide year-long interest, privacy, and vibrance to the space.

Harmony Ranch

Harmony Ranch

Harmony Ranch | Harmony, CA

The surrounding coastal hills of this residence are prone to heavy winds and beautiful vistas. In an effort to shield this home from view from the road, a large grassy mound protects the home from prevailing wind and hides it from sight. The native and drought-tolerant grasses flow in the wind and simulate a contemporary version of the surrounding grass-covered hills. A mixture of pervious gravel and modular concrete situate use patterns, while the native mature Oak trees provide instant habitat.

The deer-fenced orchard and vegetable garden features raised planters, composting bins, and a pavilion, mostly constructed with locally sourced redwood.
