Harmony Ranch

Harmony Ranch

Harmony Ranch | Harmony, CA

The surrounding coastal hills of this residence are prone to heavy winds and beautiful vistas. In an effort to shield this home from view from the road, a large grassy mound protects the home from prevailing wind and hides it from sight. The native and drought-tolerant grasses flow in the wind and simulate a contemporary version of the surrounding grass-covered hills. A mixture of pervious gravel and modular concrete situate use patterns, while the native mature Oak trees provide instant habitat.

The deer-fenced orchard and vegetable garden features raised planters, composting bins, and a pavilion, mostly constructed with locally sourced redwood.

Fresh Family Friendly

Fresh Family Friendly

Fresh Family Friendly | San Luis Obispo, CA

This custom design build project in San Luis Obispo finishes out a a beautiful new residence tucked into a gradually-sloping site with a majestic oak tree overhead. A new board-form concrete retaining wall levels the project area, creating a nook for a large swim spa just off of the main patio area. One deck encircles the spa, providing for seating and integrated, safe accessibility, while a mirroring deck extends the raised patio space underneath the oak with minimal impact to the tree. A leveled lower patio area functions as a secondary seating area and transition to a large sweeping lawn area. A modern layout of concrete stepping stones connects the upper decking with another, smaller seating area in the corner. An assortment of flowing grasses, hedging plants, ferns, and Japanese maples provide year-long interest, privacy, and vibrance to the space.

Bradley Ranch

Ranch Retreat | Bradley, CA

Perched on the edge of an existing oak woodland and overlooking a seasonal creek, the all-new outdoor and indoor living spaces seamlessly blend into the rugged natural setting. A flagstone pathway system links five structures with both a sport court and pool, and a scattering of large oak trees accent the site. Large boulders dot entry points and key features, while a limited palette of native plantings add texture and life. A full lighting installation brings warmth and safety in the evening, while remaining simple and unassuming midday.

Dry Creek Flower Garden

Dry Creek Flower Garden

Dry Creek Flower Garden | San Luis Obispo, CA

Nestled against one of San Luis Obispo’s hillside open spaces, this new residence now offers a serene, naturalistic, and vibrant back landscape for its new owners. Two curving concrete walls establish a level lower area while carving out two distinct upper levels of planting, offering a variety of spaces for an array of native plantings. A new concrete patio with a rustic wood plank texture is connected by a sinuous pathway of Sweetwater flagstone, surrounded by a clean field of pea gravel. A swath of cobble swoops through the site from one corner to the other, interspersed with boulders and dotted with low plantings. Multiple custom trellis structures offer additional interest and support for sweetly flowering honeysuckle, mirrored across the patio by a custom green wall structure that is automatically irrigated and fertilized, tied in with the sitewide system.
